The cavaquinho is a small musical instrument with a crisp, percussive tone, four metal strings, a flat fingerboard with twelve frets, and a round or "ray mouth" sound hole. There are also some models of cavaquinho with eight strings.
Each cavaquinho is often a unique piece, individually handcrafted upon request by many luthiers at their workshops. Nevertheless, some manufacturers believe that serial production of cavaquinhos – by select luthiers and brands – at more affordable prices for consumers and their presentation at international music fairs, such as Frankfurt, Shanghai, Los Angeles, Malaga, among others, contributes to a wider promotion and practice of the cavaquinho.
Thus, it is generally recognised that all makers, whether artisanal or semi-artisanal, contribute to the preservation and valuation, both nationally and internationally, of the small Portuguese stringed instrument, the cavaquinho. In 2022, the construction of the cavaquinho was included in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Portugal.
